Chewing Gum to Improve Your General Knowledge
Dentists will no doubt not appreciate this new discovery: chewing gum’s sole purpose is not only to provoke cavities, but also to help to exercise your memory.
Chewing gum aficionados are going to love this! While you’re busy chewing your piece of gum, your brain is actually receiving a dizzying spurt of activity. This is what a team of Japanese neurologists have uncovered at the Gifu University of Japan. Tests given to volunteers found that an amazing increase in brain activity occurred in the hippocampus from those who were chewing gum. The hippocampus is the part of your brain which is responsible for spatial intelligence and visual memory.
Whereas subjects not chewing gum were also observed during this experiment and did not show any signs of particular neuronal activity, other subjects who were chewing gum showed staggering signs of brain function without even exerting any intellectual activity... The researchers therefore deduced that chewing gum may help prevent memory loss due to old-age. Realistically, it’s the actual motion in chewing which produces a specific muscular activity, which in turn triggers acceleration in the hippocampus’ rhythm. In other words, sucking on a lollipop does not produce the same effect!
