Learn How to Solve a Problem !
60 years ago, the mathematician George Polya made out the four basic principles to solve any kind of problem.
Solving a problem is a skill that can be learned ! This was the creed of mathematician George Polya when he published his book « How to solve a problem » in 1945. Translated into more than 17 languages and selling over one million copies, his book became the bible of Science’s students. A brilliant teacher, Polya had identified the four basic principles to enhance our chance to solve a problem.
First of all, we must identify the problem and understand all the words used in stating it. Most of the time, the simple fact of not understanding the problem fully or even in part prevents from thinking about it clearly. According to Polya, some basic questions refering to the problem must be asked in order to check that all aspects have been understood. « Do I understand all the words used in stating the problem?", "Can I restate the problem in my own words?", "Is there enough information to enable me to find a solution?"
